Winter break is upon us! And if you're anything like us, you're scrambling to find things to do with your kids to keep everyone entertained. Even when you’re excited to spend some quality time with the whole family, stress can creep in when the eventual boredom hits. There's something for everyone, whether you have a toddler, elementary school-aged kids, or tweens and teens. Here are some fun things you can do with your kiddos this winter break…
Things to do with toddlers during winter break:
Craft your very own winter wonderland in your house: This one may require some supplies but will be so worth it when you need some indoor activity options.
Make pretend snow with ½ cup of white hair conditioner and 2.5 cups of baking soda. This is a great way to make a sensory bin and have a great time playing with “snow” in the comfort and warmth of your own house!
Print out any winter image and make your own coloring book! Let your kids pick out their favorite characters or scenes and it will keep them busy while you enjoy that rare warm cup of coffee.
This felt Christmas tree is a perfect way to keep your toddler entertained throughout the day and serves multiple purposes - it’s an exciting “new toy” and it encourages their independence and creativity.
Visit a children's museum: Most major cities have a children's museum that's perfect for young children. These museums offer interactive exhibits that allow your toddler to explore, learn, and have fun all at the same time. Pro-tip: most museum memberships pay for themselves within 1-2 visits.
Check out your local library: Many libraries have story time offerings or other special programs, but if you can’t make it during the day for that, bring your kiddo in to find some holiday books to enjoy! Most libraries have some kind of toys that will allow you a few moments of quiet while they enjoy a change of scenery.
Build a snowman: If you live in an area that gets snow during the winter, building a snowman is a classic winter activity that toddlers love. So bundle them up, grab some carrots and coal, and get ready to build the best snowman ever!
Go to a holiday light display: Many cities put up beautiful light displays during the holiday season, and toddlers will love the twinkling lights and festive atmosphere.
Lots of towns offer a map of home holiday light displays, perfect for those after dinner hours (just don’t get too close to bedtime…speaking from experience).
Make gingerbread houses: Decorating gingerbread houses is a fun activity that's perfect for little ones. You can buy pre-made gingerbread houses at most stores, or make your own from scratch if you're feeling adventurous. Pro-tip: use melted sugar instead of frosting to keep those gingerbread pieces together!
Things to do with elementary school-aged kids during winter break:
Go ice skating: Many cities have outdoor ice skating rinks during the winter months. Ice skating is a fun way to get some exercise while enjoying the winter weather.
In Indy? Check our absolute fave spot to ice skate with the family: The Ice Rink at Holliday Park
Take a hike: Staying with the theme of outdoor activities, try out a new hiking spot, and warm up with some hot chocolate when you get home.
Have a movie marathon: Winter break is the perfect time to indulge in some screen time. Pick out your favorite movies or TV shows and have a cozy movie marathon day with your kids. Need help picking one out? Check out our list of 31 movies for tweens that the whole family will love.
Bake holiday cookies: Baking cookies is a fun activity that kids of all ages enjoy. Let your kids help you mix, measure, and decorate the cookies for a fun and festive treat. There are so many benefits to improving your kid’s cooking skills.
Go on a scavenger hunt: make up a scavenger hunt (or find one online to print out) and explore around your neighborhood. This is a fun outdoor activity for all ages, and you’ll get a little exercise and fresh air as well!
Visit a winter festival: Many cities have winter festivals during the holiday season. These festivals often feature ice sculptures, live performances, and other fun winter activities.
Things to do with tweens and teens during winter break:
Go skiing or snowboarding: If you live near a ski resort, consider taking a day trip to go skiing or snowboarding. It's a fun way to get some exercise and enjoy the winter weather.
Check out an arcade: If you have a spot near you to play arcade games, laser tag, or bowling, this would make for a fun winter break activity the whole family can enjoy.
Have a game night: Winter break is the perfect time to have a family game night. Set up a tournament of your favorite games and see who comes out on top. If video games are more your family’s style, try a Mario Kart tournament.
Start a new book: We’ve got a list of some great books to check out during this extended school break.
Try a viral social media trend: Get together and learn a new dance or try a new viral recipe based on trending TikToks
Take a day trip to a nearby city: If you're feeling adventurous, consider taking a road trip to a nearby city. You can explore museums, go shopping, and try out new restaurants. And as a bonus, we’ve got all the essentials for a smooth ride.
Earn some extra cash: Babysitting, pet sitting, working retail…these are all great ways for your teen to earn some extra cash during the holiday break!
